throwing punches has changed her life

“Medikane began boxing when she was 12 and soon competed professionally. At the hall, she now guides younger girls on how to box as part of the Boxgirls International training programme, launched in Cape Town in 2009 by executive director Heather Cameron. The programme has focused on boxing training for girls in Berlin, Germany, since 2001. A second training centre opened in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007 and the third was initiated in Cape Town after Cameron met University of the Western Cape (UWC) sports studies academics, who wanted to work with the programme here. For Medikane, throwing punches has changed her life for the good; [...] Medikane is living proof of the concept as she, along with her male counterparts, organises local events. And the boxing training she offers is complemented by workshops on local government, media skills and career advice.“

It was way beyond what I ever expected

“In an extraordinary display of positivity I saw how much Sport Relief projects help build women's confidence. It was way beyond what I ever expected. These women have been through so much, yet they have more positivity than I have seen in years.“

Boxing improves girls

“When Heather Cameron isn’t busy boxing, or running her favourite project Boxgirls International, a sports training program to improve the fitness of girls and young women and enhance their leadership qualities, chances are you’ll find her with her gloves off in her other role – that of stellar academic and teacher. She was recently named Professor of the Year by the German Association of University Professors & Lecturers and is the first non-German scholar to receive this award. [...]“Boxgirls is a social profit organization that supports women and girls and uses boxing programs as a catalyst for social change,“ says Cameron. „Boxing improves girls’ strength and resilience. It allows them to negotiate the urban environment better.“ Young women come to Boxgirls because they like the idea of learning self-defence and being trained by other women, as well as doing something „different“ from regular sports.“

Organisation that provides young girls

“Andiswa [Andiswa Madikane, Boxgirls South Africa coach] is a true and shining example of what we all both young and old should aspire to be like. She gave up professional boxing and became a fulltime volunteer and coach for Box Girls South Africa; an international organisation that provides young girls with the support, tools and skills to become strong individuals and to build a strong community and this is done through a boxing programme. “

Teacher at Vuzamanzi Primary School

At the very beginning there were just a couple of learners attending, a little bit sceptical and hesitant, but, as Boxgirls continues, the attitude has changed a lot, because now you have a bigger group. There are changes in discipline (…) there is more discipline than before. The teachers (…) saw that this is not something that will be on their shoulders. as time goes on they see that it is just helping children to come and giving support to them so that the program can continue. (…) There is also more self-confidence. Girls attending Boxgirls can stand up in class, maybe you know her as somebody who is shy, but now as she continues going to this programme, it boosts their confidence.
