Afterschool Leadership Education

Boxgirls Leadership Education

In July 2015, Boxgirls started a new programme dedicated to primary school-aged girls from the communities of Khayelitsha, Nyanga, and Gugulethu. Twice a week for 12 weeks, girls attend 90-minute sessions at  Boxgirls’ Afterschool Club. These sessions are supervised by us and led by trained peer facilitators, young women who are highly respected within the local community. Girls participate in games and discussion groups, and organize community events. Together with our partner organizations, we also offer homework support on Saturdays.

The curriculum of the programme cover themes such as:

  • communication skills (active listening, presentation, debating, video making)
  • self-respect and goal setting
  • personal safety
  • community mapping
  • de-escalation strategies
  • solidarity with other girls, understanding girls’ rights
  • awareness of local resources and opportunities for them

Our program includes the offer of homework support and exam preparation at Homework Club.

We currently run our program in 20 primary schools in Khayelitsha, Site C, and three Math Hubs for Homework Club.

By April 2017 Boxgirls Afterschool Leadership Club is projected to reach nearly 90% of all primary schools in Khayelitsha.
